Political Opinion with Alison Bennett MP: Supporting community at Haywards Heath's Food and Baby Bank
Last week, I visited Haywards Heath Foodbank and Baby Bank, where Heather and her team gave me a tour of their facilities and spoke about the invaluable work they do to support people across our community.
Haywards Heath’s Foodbank and Baby Bank provide a wide range of practical assistance to residents facing difficult circumstances. From emergency food parcels to baby and children’s clothing, toys and other essentials, the support they offer can make a real difference to families when they need it most.
During my visit, I was struck not only by the scale of the operation but also by the care, compassion and dedication shown by everyone involved. The team of volunteers help local people in so many ways. Whether they are sorting donations, preparing food packages, driving delivery vans, welcoming visitors or helping to run community activities, their commitment is at the heart of everything they do. Their efforts ensure that support is delivered with kindness, dignity and respect, and they have created a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone who comes through the door.
Alongside providing practical help, the food bank also creates opportunities for people to come together. Their regular coffee mornings offer a warm and welcoming space where residents can enjoy a chat, meet friendly faces and feel part of the community, whilst their children and babies play with the wide selection of donated toys.
While it is humbling to see such generosity in action, it is also a reminder that many families continue to feel the pressure of the cost of living. Food banks and community charities provide an essential safety net, but they should not be expected to carry this burden alone. Those in power could learn a lot from the volunteers I met; compassion, practical problem-solving and a commitment to helping those who are struggling. To do this, we must get serious about reducing financial pressures on households, supporting strong public services and ensuring that everyone can live with dignity and security.
There was plenty happening during my visit, with preparations well underway for last Friday’s Teddy Bears’ Picnic in Beech Hurst. The event was just one example of how the team goes above and beyond to bring people together and create positive experiences for local families.
