Political opinion with Alison Bennett MP: Protecting the Post Office in Mid Sussex

Although we are all becoming increasingly reliant on technology to communicate, many people in our community still depend on traditional postal services. Whether it is staying in contact with loved ones, ordering goods through the mail, or managing everyday finances, the Post Office continues to play a vital role. It is all too easy to forget that not everyone can access or navigate online services, and many residents still rely on a helping hand at the library or a friendly face at the Post Office to get things done.

That is why I was concerned to learn that the Post Office located within Morrisons in Hassocks is set to close. For many residents, this is about far more than the loss of a shop. It raises serious questions about the future of Post Office counter services more broadly, including important access to everyday banking services.

I have been in contact with both Morrisons and Post Office Ltd to raise these concerns and seek clarity on what happens next. In my meetings, I made it clear that while I understand the closure of the Morrisons store is ultimately a commercial decision, it is essential that access to Post Office services is protected.

I am pleased that Post Office Ltd has reassured me of its commitment to maintaining provision in Hassocks. In the coming weeks, they will be inviting applications from local retailers interested in running a new branch within or near the village.

I would strongly encourage suitable local businesses to consider applying to host a Post Office, helping to safeguard this vital service for our community. Details will be available at: https://runapostoffice.co.uk/

In the short term, residents may face some inconvenience if the current branch closes before a replacement is secured. Alternative branches exist in Ditchling, Hurstpierpoint and Burgess Hill. But for less able-bodied residents, or those without a car, these may not be viable alternatives. This is why it is so important for Hassocks to deserve to retain accessible Post Office services. I will continue working with all parties to ensure that happens.
