Political opinion with Alison Bennett MP: An afternoon at Harlands Primary Academy
I recently got the opportunity to visit Harlands Primary Academy in Haywards Heath, where I met staff and some pupils from their Debate Club. It was a treat to chat to the children about their recent competition with other local primaries held at Haywards Heath Sixth Form College, and I even had a go at one of their debate topics: arguing for and against whether ‘every house should have a pet’. Then, I was shown around the school by Kate from the school’s trust. There is a lovely atmosphere and a real sense of community at Harlands. However, the school community is currently being let down by the fabric of their buildings.
The roof needs to be replaced, as it has been judged to be “at serious risk of imminent failure”. This has caused countless problems for Harlands. Classrooms have had to close due to severe leaks, parts of the ceiling have collapsed, and the accessible toilet has been out of action. This is unacceptable; teachers and students should not be expected to spend the school day in a building that is crumbling around them.
Another issue of great concern relates to the site’s perimeter fence, which is too low and damaged. It is important that this is remedied, not only because it is currently enabling people to gain access to the grounds after school hours. Harlands has also seen a significant rise in students with special needs, including children who are at risk of escaping. The school backs on to woodland, and is near both a road and a stream, meaning it is crucial that pupils are not able to leave the site unsupervised.
Harlands is a lovely primary school, with dedicated staff and bright pupils. They deserve a school building that matches the nurturing school environment they have created. They will be applying to the Department for Education for funding to make the necessary improvements, and I am doing everything I can to support their application so that they get the money they need for the new roof and fence.
