Job Opportunity
Do you want to work for Alison Bennett in her constituency office? We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Caseworker to join Alison Bennett’s small team, providing support and advice to constituents on a variety of issues, including personal casework, matters of policy and political campaigns.
Overview
You will lead on our office’s response to mass campaigns and to constituents asking policy questions.
You will support the Senior Caseworker with personal casework for constituents.
You will liaise with parliamentary teams, government, local councils and other agencies including the voluntary sector to resolve matters for constituents and ensure their concerns and views are heard.
You will co-ordinate Alison’s constituency surgeries, including briefing Alison, taking notes and ensuring actions are followed up.
The role is full time although we may consider part time and/or flexible hours for the right candidate. You will spend most of your week in the Burgess Hill constituency office though some hybrid working is possible.
The Ideal Candidate
You can manage a large caseload ensuring actions are taken and constituents are kept informed of the progress of their cases throughout.
You have strong organisational skills, ensuring that all actions on cases are taken in a timely manner. You prioritise effectively so that the appropriate amount of your time is given to each case based on its urgency and importance.
You enjoy working in a small team and understand the importance of contributing to the team culture and being flexible, particularly during busy periods, so that Alison and the team feel well supported by you.
You thrive in a customer facing environment. You will have customer service experience which may have been gained through your most recent position or through volunteering, previous work or an elected position.
You have a passion for helping the residents of Mid Sussex. You want to help them, answer their questions and advocate for them to large organisations.
You understand and share Alison and the Liberal Democrats’ core values and priorities and use this to inform the work that you do.
You are an effective and empathetic communicator whether in writing, on the telephone or in person. You instinctively tailor the style and tone of your communication depending on the situation and who you are engaging with.
Responsibilities
- Ensure that surgeries and other meetings are well planned and run to time, and follow up on actions as appropriate
- Deal with large numbers of queries from the public, as well as assisting on more complex cases from members of public by email, phone or face to face. Ongoing communication may be required
- Draft responses to constituents
- Ensure records are kept and information managed confidentially in line with data protection legislation
- Ensure that each case is dealt with promptly, sensitively, confidentially and accurately in accordance with the MP’s aims and objectives
- Gather relevant information to assist with resolving cases
- Log all cases, monitor progress and ensure all identified actions are taken
- Be a supportive team member, assisting in any other tasks that might be needed
- There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel to London occasionally
Requirements
- You have the right to work in the UK
- You have fluent spoken and accurate written English
- You have strong IT skills including an excellent knowledge of Microsoft products and emerging technologies
- You are sympathetic to Liberal Democrat values and aims
Desired Skills
- You have previous experience of managing casework
- You have experience of CRM systems or Caseworker
Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Salary: In line with IPSA pay scales
Length of Contract: Permanent, after successful completion of 6-month probation period
