Alison Bennett's Monday Mail: An MP’s Word Cloud

Word Cloud for Alison Bennett MP

An MP’s Word Cloud

There are various buildings that MPs’ offices are in around Parliament. In mine we have a mixture of Liberal Democrat, Labour and Plaid Cymru MPs.

One of my neighbours is Kanishka Narayan a Labour MP. He’s clearly rather smart as he has created a web tool for generating the word clouds of every MP. It’s based upon the spoken contributions of each of us that are recorded in the ‘Bible’ of Parliament Hansard. You can see my word cloud at the top of this email, or you can create the word cloud of any MP yourself. Enjoy!

Clean water and dirty water

Last year alone, there were 754 sewage spills in Mid Sussex — a shocking number for a constituency that doesn’t even have a major waterway. It's absurd, and it shows just how badly our water system is broken. In Parliament this week, I voted to introduce a new ‘Blue Flag’ status for rivers which would guarantee clean and safe water, but sadly Labour and Conservative MPs blocked the plan. You can watch my contribution to the debate here.

I also raised concerns in the local paper this week about the freshwater that is wasted through leaks in the pipe network. We need to have confidence that water – a precious resource in the water stressed South East – is never wasted, and that when new housing is proposed, the water companies have a robust plan to ensure that everyone has an adequate supply.

If we are serious about holding water companies to account, we must start by replacing the failing regulator, Ofwat. The Independent has the write up.

The Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride

I hope that you enjoyed the sunshine over the weekend as much as I did. My Sunday morning started with a trip to Haywards Heath to see off the 600+ riders in the Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride including Sussex U23 GB triathlete Issy Hayes.

Times Radio Political Panel

On Sunday evening, I was a panelist on the Times Radio Political Panel. As well as pondering Robert Jenrick’s fitness kick, I also talked about the Liberal Democrats’ prospects in this Thursday’s local elections, and the EHCR interim guidance. You can listen back on the Times Radio website and app.
