Alison Bennett's Monday Mail - Gearing up

Welcome to my Monday Mail for 15 April 2024, as I share a few of the things I've been doing and thinking about this past week, including political party spending and gearing up for the general election.

Volunteers addressing envelopes
Can you help us with clerical work this Spring?

Gearing up

This week we have been gearing up for the town council by elections in Burgess Hill and East Grinstead. This has involved talking to residents, delivering leaflets and lots of clerical work writing and stuffing envelopes.

We have lots of admin work still to do. Can you spare a little time to address letters? In exchange we can offer tea and excellent cake to spur you on.

Please get in touch by reply, or complete this online form.

What do political parties spend their money on?

Running an election campaign is expensive, but what does the money get spent on? Leaflets, staff, IT and social media all have a role to play, but what has always been essential, and how has this changed over time?

This episode of Politics without the boring bits hosted by Times journalist Matt Chorley looks at research into what money was spent on in the 2019 General Election. The panel included President of the Liberal Democrats, Mark Pack who knows an awful lot of the under the bonnet stuff about elections. If you just want to listen to the segment on election spending, fast forward to 24 mins 45 seconds into the show.

As Mark commented in the episode, the Liberal Democrats rely on a great many people giving many small donations to pay for our campaigns. You too can be a small (or large!) donor to my campaign by clicking here.

Best wishes,

Cllr Alison Bennett
Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
Mid Sussex Liberal Democrats
