Warm welcome to National Park decision

Lib Dem campaigners have warmly welcomed the decision today to establish the South Downs National Park and the inclusion of Lewes and Ditchling within the boundaries.

Lewes MP Norman Baker says: "This is a triumph for local democracy. The strength of feeling locally for Lewes and Ditchling to be included in the park was undeniable, and it is a victory for people power. Local residents have been saying for years that the establishment of the park will help protect the local environment and boost tourism in Sussex."

Liberal Democrats led the campaign for the national park

Liberal Democrats have consistently supported establishment of a national park in the face of Conservative opposition

Lib Dem-run Lewes District has supported the establishment of the national park in the face of opposition by Conservative-run East Sussex County Council as well as Conservative councils in West Sussex. Lewes District has also campaigned for the inclusion of Lewes and Ditchling within the boundaries, a position also opposed by local Conservatives.

District council leader Ann De Vecchi says: "It is great news that the national park will be established as early as next April and even better news that Lewes and Ditchling will be included within the boundaries. Opposition to this campaign by local Conservatives will not be quickly forgotten by local people."

Lewes councillor Mike Chartier says: "I'm delighted for Lewes that the town will be included. Now the hard work begins to work out what we want to do with the town as part of the national park."

A new South Downs National Park Authority is expected to be established by April 2010 and become fully operational a year later.
